Spinal Rehabilitation and Active Care

Saturday, September 18, 2010 1 pm - 5 pm Sunday, September 19, 2010 8 am - 12 pm Spinal Rehabilitation and Active Care is an 8 hour course of instruction that emphasizes exercise physiology principles and the basic design and implementation of rehabilitation and active care programs into everyday chiropractic practice. Managed care has significantly decreased the number of visits patients can get reimbursement of chiropractic care for. Thus, greater efficiency in patient management plans are needed in order to bring patients back to good function. There is an expanding literature base showing that chiropractic care that incorporates rehabilitation and active care is more clinically effective and efficient as well as effective measures to prevent recurrence of certain clinical complaints. This course will stress low technology rehabilitation and active care programs that can be initiated in practice for eventual patient home care. Specific protocols for spinal stabilization (cervical to lumbopelvic) will be covered. Course Objectives 1. Describe the physiological basis for muscle strength and how different types of exercise affect muscle function 2. Perform a evaluation of muscle function 3. Design a clinically sound rehabilitation and active care treatment program Course Outline 1. Importance of muscle function in skeletal health Spinal stability (global and local stabilizers) Effectiveness of multimodal care Treatment continuum passive to active care 2. The physiological effects of different types of exercise on muscle function Strength Power Endurance 3. Specific exercises Movement therapy - proprioception or sensory-motor stimulation Stabilization exercises 4. Protocols for Cervical spine Lumbopelvic spine 5. The use of low tech equipment in stabilization exercise protocols Swiss Ball Wobble boards etc. Pre-register with the CAS.
